Posting Summary

Rutgers, New Jersey Medical School, Department of Medicine – Division of Infectious/Diseases – Center for Emerging and Re-Emerging Pathogens, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist IV. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Teaching Specialist IV will conduct research on methods to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis and drug resistance in this organism.

• Cultures and quantitates pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria including M. Tuberculosis, and select agents requiring work in BSL3 facilities including drug resistant strains.

• Conducts validation studies of molecular detection and drug resistance assays.

• Performs detailed MICs of above described bacteria using various systems.

• Performs DNA extraction, Sanger and next generation sequencing and analysis of assay discordant samples.

• Assists in the development and testing of new assays including primer and molecular probe design.

• Assists in conducting a continuous program of research and development. Evaluates existing procedures and proposes modifications or changes in order to keep the methodology and procedures current.

• Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows, technicians and laboratory assistants as required.

• Keeps detailed records of procedures and experiments. May be required to compile data and present results.

• Assists the Principal Investigator in written and formal presentations to industrial collaborators and funding agencies.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Master’s Degree in a relevant science, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience.

• BSL3 experience working with virulent CDC classified tier 1 select agents and M. tuberculosis, experience in molecular beacon design, molecular biological techniques.

• Bacterial and M. tuberculosis microbiological assays.

• Physical Demands – Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten pounds. Must be able to work 8 hours shifts wearing protective clothing and equipment in BSL3 facility.
