Recruitment/Posting Title Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Engineer
Job Category Staff & Executive - Information Technology
Department Advanced Research Computing

The Rutgers University Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC) was established in 2015 as a university-wide office to provide strategic Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI) leadership to the research and education communities on all campuses of the university, coordinate technology investments in ACI and related expertise, and catalyze and nurture cyberinfrastructure-enabled multidisciplinary research – all aimed at fostering a productive scientific and scholarly community of excellence in advanced computing and data-enabled science that empowers research, learning, and societal engagement. By reporting to both the Office of Research and Economic Development and the Office of Information Technology, OARC acts as a bridge between the research and IT communities. This commitment by the university lays the groundwork for establishing a sustainable, centralized advanced cyberinfrastructure (ACI) initiative at Rutgers University. This includes providing a scalable next generation ACI environment that leverages local, regional, national, and cloud resources, creating a powerful solution to not only meet the computing needs of industry, academia, and government, but to create an environment conducive to facilitating innovative ideas.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Engineer for the Office of Advanced Research Computing. The incumbent in this position works closely with world-class researchers at Rutgers University to enable optimal use of the university’s SDN environment, with responsibility for supporting researchers with data-intensive network requirements demanding optimal end-to-end performance and those who use the platform for network research.

Working under general direction, the CI Engineer identifies network and end-to-end performance requirements of research groups and coordinates design modifications and configuration changes needed by network research, including hardware, and software. In partnership with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) network group and/or departmental/college IT group(s), the incumbent carries out network performance measurements and monitors both the research and enterprise networks to ensure that requirements have been met and that optimal or near-optimal utilization of the research network has been achieved.

The CI Engineer participates in the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of the university SDN environment and works very closely with the OIT and/or departmental/college network groups, in support of external Internet and Internet2 connectivity, the university’s core network infrastructure, the access and distribution layers of the campus network, and network equipment in research centers throughout the campus. This incumbent is routinely embedded for periods of time within research centers throughout the university in order to carry out the required functions.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Designs and implements solutions to support the SDN based research network to meet the needs of the university research community, including solutions for both ultra-high bandwidth and ultra-low latency, in order to achieve the required end-to-end performance (which also involves related topics like capacity and circuit headroom, buffering, quality of service marking of traffic, etc.).
  • Designs and implements solutions to support international research collaborations, including solutions involving both software and hardware components and different functional and performance requirements.
  • Designs and implements network performance metrics and proactively recommends solutions for capacity-planning purposes.
  • Provides guidance and works with others in the department and division concerning the architecture and strategic direction of future research networks.
  • Develops and ensures compliance with university network architectural design and network standards.
  • Makes decisions and follows through; assesses a situation and make an optimal and speedy decision despite limited information.
  • Participates in preparation of research proposals to external funding entities to provide expertise in the area of cyberinfrastructure.
  • Makes proactive recommendations through investigation of multiple possible solutions and strategies for designing and implementing a more robust and reliable set of core technology services.
  • Works closely with the project management team to ensure the establishment of realistic project schedules and budgets.
  • Employs project management methodology to ensure projects are completed within specified time constraints, policies, and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains thorough and complete system documentation.
