Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Genetic Counselor for the Medical Oncology department at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The Genetic Counselor provides genetic counseling and directs patient related activities at cancer genetic clinic. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Provides genetic counseling to patients including an explanation of how heredity contributes to the patient’s risk, discusses management of that risk, discusses risks and benefits of genetic testing, assists patients and their family members to make the best possible decisions regarding genetic information in the context of their own circumstances, and evaluates the patient’s or family’s responses to the condition, perception of risk, or risk of recurrence.
• Identifies most appropriate family members for genetic testing and provides cancer risk assessment for patients based on family history information. Documents three generation family history and family pedigrees with regard to hereditary cancer risk.
• Using risk estimate models, calculates a patient-specific risk for a hereditary cancer syndrome based on medical and family history and explains this estimate to the patient, including the benefits and limitations of such models.
• Identifies specialized genetic laboratories and coordinates laboratory services for the purpose of genetic testing and/or DNA banking for patients and their appropriate family members.
• Makes appropriate referrals for additional genetic tests, medical management, support groups, and social services.
• Enters patient and family medical history into Progeny database. Utilizes Progeny database as needed for clinical information, including identification of patient specific variables, tracking family history information, medical history information, etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Masters or a PhD from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics.
• Forty (40) continuing education hours with at least one hour in medical ethics every two years.
• Current, valid New Jersey license as a genetic counselor.
• Individuals pending formal licensure must show proof that all required elements of licensure have been met; complete and submit the application for licensure to the licensing agency and provide the letter (pending license) from the agency allowing them to begin work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
• Experience conducting training, developing/presenting formal lectures and coordinating genetic counseling services with affiliates.
• Effective communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience utilizing the Progeny database.
