Posting Summary

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Mental Health Clinician II for Northern State Prison, located in Newark, New Jersey. The Mental Health Clinician II completes specialized psychological testing and assessment of clinical needs of adult inmates sentenced to the Department of Corrections.

  • Arrives at DSM 5 diagnoses with precision and accuracy, by the end of psychological testing and the evaluation session.
  • Develops treatment plans. Makes clinically based decisions regarding appropriateness for treatment, as well as, preferred treatment modality.
  • Assesses and makes referrals for higher levels of care, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates competency in psychological testing and in recognizing the unique needs and behaviors of adult inmates, seniors and their families.
  • Skilled in testing and in providing group, individual and family therapies.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Psychology or directly related mental health discipline.
  • Trained in psychological testing and measurement plus (2) years post master’s experience in mental health field or Doctorate in psychology.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Computer literacy. Typing. Ability to work at varying computer workstations, provided by the Department of Corrections, in shared office environments. Ability to speak clearly and write proficiently, is essential. Extensive reading required. Extended sitting and/or standing are required. Ability to move from unit to unit within residential facilities requiring walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls. Lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. Hearing and sight are essential. Ability to speak clearly is required. May be required to travel within the state. Ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions.

Able to function in a stressful environment and relate well to the patients, security staff and health care team members. A generally crisis oriented, secure environment, working with adults, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and assaultive behaviors. Handle emergency and crisis situations. Must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

Special Conditions
  • Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements. Employees will be subject to and must comply with all security regulations and procedures of NJ Department of Corrections and the assigned facility(ies) including, but not limited to, sign in logs or electronic time clocks, searches of person and property, etc. Violations of NJ Department of Corrections and/or being banned by the Department of Corrections to work at a NJ Department of Corrections’ facility are grounds for a disciplinary action and potential termination.
  • Valid Driver’s License. Must possess own vehicle.
