Posting Summary

Through this position, the Department of Landscape Architecture at Rutgers University School of Environmental and Biological Sciences seeks to expand its scholarly and engagement activities regarding data-driven responsible design and its impact on community outreach and research projects. In the era of ‘data-overload’ special attention must be given within research towards how data (GIS and other data sources) are handled and how specific information is chosen to move from mere ‘data mapping’ and ‘datascapes’ to the development of coherent and fully functional data-driven design tools. In addition to strong national and international scholarly accomplishments, we seek a faculty member who will continue to expand his/her research agenda, help direct the strategic vision of the department, and launch new avenues of research. The successful candidate is expected to further develop the new departmental visualization lab, utilize the existing fabrication lab and computer lab, and develop links to the new maker space on campus.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Candidate must have demonstrated knowledge and engagement with landscape architecture and/or environmental planning as disciplines and professions. A multi-disciplinary perspective is considered an asset, with an advanced terminal degree in landscape architecture, architecture, computational design, planning, or other pertinent field. Teaching experience is greatly valued. Areas of specialty should focus on the nexus between creative design process, data-driven responsible design, and community outreach. A record of creative design and original research including grants and academic publications in the field of design computing is required. A high degree of versatility and a background in interdisciplinary activity are important in this position.

Overview

The Department of Landscape Architecture at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks candidates to fill a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor – AY position in Digital Design that focuses on advanced computational processes for landscape design and planning including computational modeling, visualization, interactive systems, digital fabrication and experimental media. This is an academic year position that will be based in the Department of Landscape Architecture and is intended to build stronger connections with Fine Arts, Urban Planning, Human Ecology and other related disciplines. The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate seminars, lecture courses, and design studio. The successful candidate will play an active role in directing undergraduate and graduate student research. He/she is also expected to participate in departmental and university committees and assist in undergraduate and graduate curriculum development.
