Posting Summary

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Dental Assistant (Per Diem) to assist during treatment of inmates at various Prisons within the Department of Corrections statewide. The Dental Assistant assists the Dentist during the examination and treatment of patients by performing certain inter-oral tasks under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist.

  • Prepares operatory with appropriate instruments and material for the patients scheduled to be seen.
  • Provides chair-side assistance during treatment recognizing the dentist’s need for instruments, material, retraction or suction.
  • Mixes and fabricates restorative materials; sterilizes instruments and disinfects operatory between patients.
  • Develops and mounts routine radiographs; assists in exposing intro-oral and extra-oral radiographs; maintains and cleans x-ray unit, film processor, autoclave, wet tank and dental unit.
  • Orders and keeps inventory of supplies to maintain established levels.
  • Assists in maintaining dental charts, dental findings, maintains confidentiality of the dental records and schedules patients for dental appointments.
  • Collects requested data for dental clinic reports.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduate from an accredited Dental Assisting Program.
  • Certification as a Dental Assistant in the State of New Jersey.
  • Valid Dental Radiology Technology License issued by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be certified in CPR.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Possesses own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Ability to type and use a computer to enter in the Electronic Medical Record. Ability to speak clearly and write proficiently is essential. Extensive reading, extended sitting required. Ability to move from unit to unit within the correctional facilities. Frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls. Intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities. Manual dexterity and mobility for charting (typing). Lifting and pulling up to 50 pounds, hearing and sight are essential. May be required to travel within the state and ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions.

A generally crisis oriented, secure environment working with adults, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and assaultive behaviors. Handle emergency and crisis situations. Incumbent must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, strains. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

Special Conditions

Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements. Employees will be subject to and must comply with all security regulations and procedures of NJ Department of Corrections and the assigned facility(ies) including, but not limited to sign in logs or electronic time clocks, searches of person and property, etc. Violations of NJ Department of Corrections and/or being banned by the Department of Corrections to work at a NJ Department of Corrections’ facility are grounds for a disciplinary action and potential termination.
