Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Specialist IV for the Child & Adolescent Services – Children’s Transitional Residence Program at Rutgers, University Behavioral Health Care.

The Mental Health Specialist IV provides daily care and supervision to children residing in the Children’s Transitional Residence. Supervises daily activities, such as personal care routines, meals and transportation to and from school and medical appointments. Monitors children for 24 hours a day including overnight and visual checks. Provides behavioral reinforcement, positive role-modeling and feedback to children to encourage more adaptive and pro-social behaviors.

• Implements recreational and therapeutic activities and trips appropriate to children’s age, abilities, and therapeutic needs.
• Intervenes effectively to maintain safety and security for children in crisis by using both verbal and physical crisis intervention strategies.
• Communicates effectively with other specialist as well as education, clinical, and administrative staff.
• Assists in implementing on-going treatment plans.
• Assists in maintaining a clean, secure and nurturing environment.
• Demonstrates increasing awareness of relevant UBHC and program policies, procedures, and requirements as observed by supervisor.
• Follows UBHC policy for documentation and confidentiality when interacting with clients, families, or other agencies.
• Understands and adheres to Rutgers’ compliance standards as they appear in RBHS’s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Successful completion of a one (1) year training program as a Mental Health Specialist Trainee or one (1) year of similar full-time experience in the mental health field.
• An associate’s degree, preferably in a related health field, including 12 credits in human services such as psychology or its equivalent may be substituted for the minimum requirements of this position.

• Previous experience with children (ages 5 – 11 years).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Employee must be physically active and be on feet most of the day. Duties may involve bending and lifting objects up to 25 lbs., running and playing active games with children and adolescents (ages 5 – 11 years) and driving minivans or other vehicles. Following training, employee must be physically capable of safely providing personal restraints to agitated children (ages 5 – 11 years).

• The work environment is crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children and staff moving about.

Special Conditions

• Valid driver’s license.
• Must obtain CPR/First Aid certification or qualify to obtain certifications within six (6) month of hire.
• Meets annual requirements: annual employee health update (to include PDD), all mandatory educational requirements, and provides Accreditation & Standards Department and Human Resources copies of any degree requirements, new licenses or new credentials acquired over the last year.
