Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Medical Coder for the Radiation Oncology department at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The primary purpose of this position is to abstract charges and related diagnoses from medical records to ensure services billed are consistent with the medical record and ensure that all clinical billing adheres to statutes and regulations applicable to federal health care program requirements and to state and federal laws governing all other third party payors. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Works with faculty and clinical staff to ensure accurate documentation of billable professional services.
• Meets with Physicians, Advanced Practice Nurses and other health care providers to provide instruction on procedure and Evaluation of Management coding guidelines in both individual and group setting.
• Requires interaction with patients in all age categories from infants through geriatrics and all patient populations, including individuals with cancer.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• A minimum of three (3) years (four (4) years preferred) experience in CPT-4 and ICD-9-CM coding and abstracting experience for a physician office, hospital or insurance carrier multi – specialty areas, of which, one (1) year in radiation oncology, is preferred.
• Certified Procedural Coder Certification (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist Certification (CCS).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.
• Knowledge of CMS, Medicaid and third party payer coding, billing, and compliance regulations.
• Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
• Ability to navigate and research on the internet.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Must be able to work independently and manage multiple priorities and issues.
• Must be able to meet with physicians, advanced practice nurses and other health care providers to provide instruction on procedure and evaluation of management coding guidelines in both individual and group setting.
• Maintains confidentiality of protected health information.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of Infinity and Medaptus systems.
• Experience working in a teaching/academic/research oncology center.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office environment. Moderate noise.

Special Conditions

This position will be based in our Newark satellite office.
