Overview

Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care is seeking a Mental Health Specialist IV/Driver for the Newark Child & Adolescent Services Program. The Mental Health Specialist IV/Driver position transports clients to and from treatment and other related activities and actively participates in crisis interventions. Actively assists as a member of a team in providing and maintaining a therapeutic environment.

  • Establishes and maintains consistent and appropriate professional boundaries with all consumers as indicated by feedback from consumers, clinical staff, and supervisors.
  • Communicates with clinical staff within prescribed time frame when problems are encountered while transporting consumers.
  • Ensures consumers utilize safety measures while boarding, riding, and exiting program vehicles, in accordance with policies.
  • Maintains a daily log of consumer transportation services.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of program vehicle(s) and upkeep of the environment of vehicle(s) as monitored by Supervisor and Logistical Services.
  • Develops knowledge of program policies and procedures. Meets all annual requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A minimum of two years of experience interacting with mental health consumers.
  • Successful completion of a one (1) year training program as a Mental Health Specialist Trainee or one (1) year of similar full time experience.
  • An Associate’s Degree in a related field may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrates skill/ability in using computers.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Employee is expected to drive up to a 14 passenger vehicle to outreach consumers, and to take consumers to various sites in neighboring communities for scheduled appointments. May be expected to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Driving conditions vary depending upon weather and traffic. Driving throughout program county. Program environment is busy, noisy, and hectic. Subject to unpredictable situations, consumer crises, both medical and psychiatric.
  • Occasionally exposed to consumers exhibiting assaultive behaviors. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens requiring the use of personal protective equipment. May be exposed to varying or extreme temperatures.
