Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking an Unit Administrator.

Reporting to Laboratory Support Specialist in Department of Biology, Faculty of Arts and Sciences-Newark, supervises day-to-day operations of the Biology Learning Center (BLC) ensuring optimal experience for students.

The Unit Administrator:
• Maintains, prepares, and orders teaching materials and supplies.
• Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and supervises staff, including graduate teaching assistants, undergraduate peer tutors, work study students, and non-instructional coadjutants.
• Orders supplies, prepares materials, and organizes self-paced labs.
• Contributes to weekly prep meetings for General Biology staff communicating on behalf of the BLC.
• Maintains BLC organized and operated in a clean and safe manner in accordance with all established procedures and regulations.
• Completes work under close supervision, with specific instructions on routine and or semi-routine work and/or within established work parameters.
• Makes decisions or choices following standard practices and procedures.

Work is generally reviewed upon completion. Performance professional work requiring general knowledge and basic application and use of concepts, theories, terminology, and practices. Work is performed in compliance with the procedures, policies, and processes of the Department, FASN, RU-N, and Rutgers systems as well as relevant external policies and regulations.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology or related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience in general and biological sciences.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Requires knowledge of scientific empirical procedures, understanding of basic biology and laboratory procedures and laboratory environment. Good communication skills and computer literacy are required.

Equipment Utilized

Adherence to relevant safety procedures mandatory. Exposure to common hazards from chemicals and preserved and live specimens in use in biological laboratories.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Must be able to lift and move at least 30 pounds.
