Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Clinician II for the Newark Crisis Clinic at Rutgers, University Behavioral Health Care.

The primary purpose of the Mental Health Clinician II position is to be the primary intake clinician for families with children and adolescents who need urgent clinical services. In addition, the Mental Health Clinician II serves as an assistant to the Program Coordinator in the chart review process of the unit.

• Provides assessments in accordance with professional and agency standards of quality and safety.
• Involves the child/adolescent and family or other support system in developing achievable, understandable, and person-centered treatment plans in accordance with accepted professional standards and UBHC standards.
• In collaboration with supervisor and other clinical staff, identifies appropriate resources for consumers and families/support system based on assessed needs in accordance with professionally accepted standards as measured by supervisory observation and record review.
• In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, determines whether a family needs further follow-up and assigns that family to the appropriate clinician for future therapy sessions.
• Assists the Program Coordinator in completing monthly chart reviews of clinical documentation.
• As needed, provides individual, group and family crisis intervention and therapy for families enrolled with Crisis Services.
• Maintains knowledge about the resources available through the Children System of Care (CSOC) and is able to link children, adolescents and young adults to those resources.
• As needed, assumes overall follow-up responsibilities for assigned consumers including coordination of treatment and liaison with community agencies as measured by supervisory observation and review.
• Maintains appropriate consumer records in a timely manner as mandated by Center policy.
• Collaborates with consumers/families and their respective support systems in developing a discharge plan.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Master’s degree in a mental health discipline.
• Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.
• Experience with the standard diagnostic manual and appropriate diagnostic skills.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• License in a mental health discipline (LSW, LCSW, LAC, LPC, LMFT or psychology license).
• Screener certification or eligibility for screener certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Post graduate experience working with adults, children and adolescents in a crisis setting.
CADC/LCADC in addition to clinical license.
• Bilingual skills in English/Spanish.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Position requires moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 pounds). Frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls. Manual dexterity and mobility for charting. Lifts supplies, equipment and charts. Sitting while interviewing clients; may sit up to several hours in one place. Working with seriously mentally ill adults and children/adolescents with behavioral difficulties.

• The work environment is generally pleasant in a clean, well-lighted, and quiet to moderately loud setting. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. May be exposed to clients exhibiting assaultive or aggressive behaviors.
