Overview

Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Peer Support Specialist II for the Vet2Vet Helpline of Rutgers, University Behavioral Health Care.

Performs functions in support of the Unit’s mission providing person centered, culturally competent, and “consumer friendly” services to individuals who contact the Call Center. Receives telephone, chat, and text requests for service, undertakes review of the service need of the caller or consumer, and responds by offering peer support and appropriate referrals and disposition.

• Develops and maintains a peer to peer relationship with individuals served so that he/she can identify emotional, psychiatric or behavioral changes with may require further support.
• Utilizes own experiences as a vehicle to connect and establish rapport and relationship building with individual served.
• Responds to referrals, inquiries, and other contacts with professionals, outside agencies, and other parties in a professional and cordial manner.
• Assists the individuals served in identifying their personal goals, in setting objectives for each goal, and determining interventions to be used based on the consumer’s life goals.
• Assists the individual served to effectively address the identified problem, and/or refers the individuals served to the appropriate clinical staff.
• Demonstrates awareness of co-occurring substance abuse disorders and cultural factors that affect patterns.
• Demonstrates awareness that the CASE model is the tool used by UBHC to assess suicide risk.
• Demonstrates the ability to identify contacts that need a higher level of intervention, and follow departmental protocol for handling and triaging crisis or high risk calls.
• Explains referral/disposition to consumer in a clear and supportive fashion as indicated by satisfactory rate of compliance determined by supervisor and employee.
• Documents contacts, interventions, and interactions with callers in a timely manner and in accordance with established policies.
• Maintains comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of eligibility and admission criteria for units, programs and contracts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• At least five years of active duty service or have served sixty days in a combat zone which includes medically discharged or medically retired service members or have served six years in the National Guard or have the demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position based on relevant life experience or as a caregiver to one of the above service members.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to use a computer to record services and other basic office functions.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant social or health care field.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Position requires the ability to speak clearly and write proficiently. Hearing is essential. The ability to focus on the task at hand despite numerous interruptions. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and document into an electronic contact record. May be required to lift up to 20lbs.

• The work environment is generally pleasant in a clean, well-lighted, and quiet to moderately loud setting. Handles phone requests under time and decision-making pressure. Handles emergency or crisis situations.

• May be required to work nights and weekends.
