Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Carpenter/Maintenance Mechanic. Reporting directly to a second level supervisor.

The Carpenter/Maintenance Mechanic:
- Works independently in a “zone” or as the only Carpenter/Maintenance Mechanic on a particular campus.
- May guide and instruct other staff in the performance of a wide range of carpentry and mechanical duties required for all University facilities.
- Such duties may be based on work orders which provide little or no instruction or assistance.
- Responsible for estimation of work and procuring appropriate materials for him/herself or the group.
- May guide and instruct craft trainees.
- May perform any duties of the group.
- May be assigned to perform general duties in other trade areas.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent, plus four years experience performing carpentry work. Must be competent in performing complex and varied carpentry tasks. Successful completion of an approved training program or of a certified apprenticeship program in the trade, plus two years experience and proven competency in performing complex and varied carpentry work may be substituted for the above experience. A valid driver’s license with two years driving experience is necessary. Will be required to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course. May be required to obtain Commercial Driver’s License. Requires good communication skills, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and blueprints.
