Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist IV for Tissue Analytic Services/ Bio-specimen Repository Department at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Under the direction of the Section Head, the Research Teaching Specialist IV assists in the acquisition, cryopreservation, processing, cataloging and shipping of tissues/body fluids and other biological specimens from hospital operating rooms, patient procedures sites, pathology laboratories and various patient encounter areas for the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Tissue Analytic Services/Bio-specimen Repository. This position will process complex (heme, PBMC, DNA/RNA extraction) and simple specimens for the BRS banking group. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Collects tissues, body fluids and other biological specimens from area hospital operating rooms, pathology laboratories and other patient encounter areas to transport them to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Tissue Analytic Services/Bio-specimen Repository laboratory or other research laboratories.
• Processes complex and simple samples for banking including but not limited to; bone marrow asp, PBMC, DNA/RNA extraction techniques.
• Spins, processes, freezes tissue, body fluid and other biological specimens for short/long term storage.
• Accurately documents tissue, body fluid and biological specimen collection information onto specimen collection forms.
• Accurately transcribes written specimen collection information into BRS confidential database.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Master’s Degree in Biology or a relevant science or a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or a relevant science plus one (1) year research laboratory experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Effective oral and communication skills.
• Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

• Biorepository experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands:
Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25lbs.

Work Environment:
Laboratory environment, moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, anti-neoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
