The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from organisms to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions.

We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.

In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Development for The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This position reports to the Vice Dean for Advancement for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) and the NJ Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES), and generates private support for the SEBS and NJAES. The Director of Development solicits gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations and special resources to support a portfolio of School and Experiment Station programs, institutes, centers, and departments. The position independently designs overall development strategy, develops individualized cultivation and solicitation plans for identified major prospects, and creates short and long-term programs for clients.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Works with the Vice Dean for Advancement to collaboratively determine fundraising goals, securing gifts of $25,000+ to meet the short- and long-term fundraising goals for the School and Experiment Station.
• Makes a defined number of qualified and unqualified contacts and cultivates relationships with potential donors. It also advises and guides departments and faculty and staff for solicitation meetings.
• Builds successful relationships with alumni, volunteers, faculty, staff, and students, and serves as a fundraising campaign manager.
• Promotes clients’ development efforts through internal and external media and through programs that are entrepreneurial and creative.
• Monitor or develop budgets and provide financial reports, in consultation with the Vice Dean for Advancement.
• Completes work independently with broadly defined work objectives and limited review of overall results.
• Performs professional work that requires specialized to general knowledge of fundraising, planned giving, volunteer management, program implementation, public relations and marketing principles and practices, and a solid understanding, use and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology and applied bases of development.

Minimum Education and Experience

•Position requires a bachelor’s degree preferably in marketing, business, or communication, and experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of fundraising, solicitation strategies, development, philanthropy, planned giving, public relations, event execution and/or non-profit marketing.
•Plus a minimum of five years experience in fundraising that includes success in securing substantial gifts, demonstrated diplomatic negotiating, consensus building, collaboration, the use of promotional tools and techniques, and
development of creative and innovative programs and strategies.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•Also requires the ability to think strategically; understand the role of individuals, corporations, and foundations in contemporary philanthropy; and handle complex organizational detail; excellent oral and written communication skills; computer literacy to include industry standard software; and experience articulating values, information, and compelling cases to multiple audiences, one-on-one, and through formal proposals
and/or presentations.
•Requires excellent oral and written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to deal with a
variety of situations with discretion and confidentiality, and the ability to prioritize job duties in a flexible manner.

Preferred Qualifications

•Relevant experience in an institution of higher education is preferred.

•Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access); Rutgers University Foundation donor databases and software;
Rutgers e-mail system.
•Fundraising resources: online development research tools, Chronicle of Philanthropy, CASE Currents, and other
printed industry and professional development resources.
•Equipment: Computer, printer, PDA, telephone, fax machine, copier.
•Other: Web-based remote access to RUF databases and fundraising software and Rutgers e-mail system.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

•Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekend hours in addition to the standard workweek.
•Must be able to drive own car as needed.
•Some light lifting of materials for events.
