Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Health Records Clerk, within Rutgers University Correctional Health Care at Southern State Correctional Facility located in Delmont, New Jersey. The Health Records Clerk is responsible and accountable for the maintenance of health records.
• Organizes and maintains a system of files and records concerning diagnosis, treatments, admissions, and discharges.
• Compiles, verifies, types, and files medical records of inmates, within New Jersey Department of Corrections.
• Performs all clerical duties related to the assembling and maintaining of medical records, including initiating records for new
• Ensures the confidentiality of all medical records information.

Minimum Education and Experience

• High school graduate or equivalent.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications

• A minimum of one (1) year of experience in medical records.
• Familiarity with the Problem Oriented Medical Record (SOAP) or similar system.
• Clerical experience in relational database processes, and computer literacy, such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Access.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Typing, ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments, ability to speak clearly and write proficiently is essential, extensive reading required, extended sitting is required, ability to move from unit to unit within correctional facilities, frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls, intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities, manual dexterity and mobility for charting, lifting of up to 50 pounds, hearing and sight are essential, may be required to travel within the state, ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions.

Able to function in a stressful environment and relates well to patients, security staff and healthcare team members. A generally crisis oriented, secure environment working with inmates, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening behavior. Individual must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

Special Conditions

• Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements. Employees will be subject to, and must comply with, all security regulations and procedures of New Jersey DOC and the assigned facility(ies) including, but not limited to sign in logs or electronic time clocks, searches of person and property, etc. Violations of NJ DOC’s and/or being banned by the DOC to work in a New Jersey DOC facility are grounds for a disciplinary action and potential termination.
