Posting Summary

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking an Advanced Practice Nurse (Part Time) for the Juvenile Justice Commission located in Bordentown, New Jersey.

The Advanced Practice Nurse ensures that the total health needs of inmates within New Jersey Department of Corrections are met, including adolescents (16 to 18 years) and adults (18-64 years).

• Utilizes the medical model to meet a variety of healthcare needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus.
• Responds to and initiates care for medical emergencies throughout the assigned sites.
• Works with a variety of healthcare professionals and corrections officers in a correctional environment providing health services to inmates.
• Provides basic medical services under a collaborating licensed physician.
• Provides direct and indirect basic medical care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the inmate within the framework established by New Jersey Department of Corrections.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. Graduate of an accredited college/university nurse practitioner program.
• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey. Current Certificate as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of New Jersey. Maintains required annual licensure and credentialing requirements for nurse practitioners in the healthcare unit. Maintains an active CPR certification.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Computer literacy and valid driver’s license. Must possess own vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in nursing or related health field.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking or hearing. No special vision requirements.

Typing, ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Juvenile Justice Commission in shared office
environments. Ability to speak clearly and write proficiently is essential, extensive reading required, extended sitting and/or standing is required. Ability to move from unit to unit within the secure care and community residential home facilities requiring walks, bends, stretches, pushes, and pulls. Lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, and intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities. Hearing is essential, ability to speak clearly is required, required to travel within the state, ability to
implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions and on call responsibilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office environment. Moderate Noise.

A crisis oriented, secure environment working with juvenile residents, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and
assaultive behaviors. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handle emergency and crisis situations. Nurse must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, strains. May be exposed to varying or extreme temperatures. Generally pleasant working conditions in a clean, well-lighted, and quiet to moderately loud setting. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

Special Conditions

Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements. Employees will be subject to and must comply with all security regulations and procedures of NJ Department of Corrections and the assigned facility(ies) including, but not limited to sign in logs or electronic time clocks, searches of person and property, etc. Violations of NJ Department of Corrections and/or being banned by the Department of Corrections to work at a NJ Department of Corrections’ facility are grounds for a disciplinary action and potential termination.
