Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Specialist IV for the Child & Adolescent Services – Education at Rutgers, University Behavioral Health Care.

Participates as a member of the Child Therapeutic Day School staff providing therapeutic and special education services to children.

• Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary staff team implementing each child’s Treatment Plan.
• Assists Special Education Teacher in the classroom providing education services to children.
• Helps implement the classroom behavior management system.
• Participates in the development of children’s individual Treatment Plan.
• Provides behavior crisis prevention and intervention, as needed, including personal restraints (once trained) and conducting debriefing discussions.
• Provides ongoing supervision of children individually and in groups at arrival, dismissal, during lunch, and throughout the day.
• Assists children with self-care skills and activities of daily living, encouraging developmentally appropriate, independent behavior.
• Drives children in cars or minivans as needed.
• Completes required clinical documentation thoroughly and on time.
• Assists in providing orientation and guidance to per diem Mental Health Specialists and undergraduate interns.
• Participates in staff development that meets individual learning needs.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires successful completion of a one year training program as a Mental Health Specialist Trainee or one year of similar full-time experience in the mental health field.
• An Associate’s degree, preferably in a related field, including 12 credits in human services, such as psychology or its equivalent, may be substituted for the minimum requirements of this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience with children (3½ – 21 years) preferred.
• Classroom experience preferred.

Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment

• The employee must be physically active and be on their feet most of the day. Duties may involve running and playing active games with children and adolescents (3½ – 21 years), driving mini vans or other vehicles. Upon completion of training, employee must be physically capable of safely providing personal restraint to agitated children.

• The work environment is crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, and staff moving about.

Special Conditions

• Must undergo criminal history background check at employee’s expense, as required by NJ State Law.
• Valid driver’s license required.
