Posting Summary

Rutgers the State University of New Jersey is seeking a Principle Laboratory Technician in RUCDR that will function as a group leader for performing basic Molecular Biology assays, including DNA/RNA isolation, electrophoresis, quality control measurements, PCR and other related techniques.
• Will work with several robotic systems for high-throughput analysis.
• Will train new employees and assign duties to employees within the group
General Summary:
• Under broad guidance and direction, functions as the group leader and instructor for laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, and students of a large university laboratory and/or teaching program. Provides professional-level laboratory technical support involving the application of scientific research methods and techniques.
• Performs and oversees the performance of multistage purifications, other assays, and tests; the propagation of non-animal specimens and cell cultures; the preparation of tissues, chemicals, and/or living subjects for testing; may perform the breeding of small animals; and related duties.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline. A combination of two years college-level science curriculum plus two years laboratory technician or relevant laboratory research-study experience carrying out research protocols and tests may be substituted for the degree. An additional equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may take the place of the experience in the above combination. Also requires knowledge of scientific empirical procedures. Must understand the fundamentals of the science; read and understand technical documents; perform complex scientific routines, protocols, and tests; articulate data to researcher; give clear directions to others; lift and move up to 30 pounds; and operate and maintain sophisticated equipment. Requires the ability to group lead. Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats. Must be able to communicate effectively. Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs. May require a valid driver’s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course. Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Bachelors degree in Biology/Chemistry or equivalent. Two years of related laboratory experience. Good general knowledge of biology and chemistry. Good communication, interpersonal, organizational, math and analytical skills. Must be able to read and understand technical documents, operate scientific instruments and computers, perform detailed work, and manage multiple tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in working with StarLIMS system, DNA and/or biochemical extraction, blood cell separation, laboratory reagent preparation and biohazardous material handling.

Equipment Utilized

Fluidigm Biomark HR real time PCR platform, Biomek FX (fluid robotics); Ion-Torrent DNA sequencer; Illumina HiSeq, MiSeq and NextSeq Bead Array Genome Analyzers; Illumina iScan array scanner; Caliper Sciclone Next Generation robotic genomic sequencer; Caliper G-X Gene Chip RNA and DNA separation apparatus; ABI thermocyclers; Affymetrix Gene Titan microarray instrumentation. Incubators, BioSafety Cabinets, Centrifuges, Pipet-Aids, Microscopes, -80 Freezers, Liquid Nitrogen Dewars and Freezers, Spectrophotometers.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Excellent manual dexterity skills. Must be able to lift light- to medium-weight objects and work with low-level background noise from instrumentation.

Special Conditions

Education/experience in biology, chemistry or related fields. Requires occasional weekend, evening, and holiday hours.
