Overview

Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Clinician II, Per Diem for the Child & Adolescent Services – School Base Program at Rutgers, University Behavioral Health Care. Reports to the Program Director.

Under supervision, coordinates and provides comprehensive mental health care and related services to children and adolescents in schools. Assists in the development of treatment plans, including referral for appropriate level of mental health services. Demonstrates competency in assessing and treating children and adolescents (5-18 years).

• Collaborates effectively with other staff members, referral sources and social support networks to provide treatment and care for clients and families as measured by supervisory observation and record review.
• Schedules and conducts psychosocial skills development groups for students and parents.
• Provides individual, group, and family psychotherapy as clinically indicated to assigned clients, including children and adolescents (5-18 years).
• Conducts accurate assessment and involves client and/or family in developing achievable and understandable psychosocial treatment plans in accordance with accepted professional and University Behavioral Health Care standards, as observed by supervisor.
• Assists students in effectively managing crisis as measured by supervisor’s observations.
• Advocates for appropriate resources for clients and families based on assessed needs in accordance with professionally accepted standards as measured by supervisory observation and record review.
• Makes home visits as necessary to engage families and provide effective interventions.
• Collects and maintains appropriate client records as dictated by the program evaluations requirements.
• Based on performance improvement plan, regularly attends and participates in in-service meetings and other designated training events that will enhance clinical skills as documented by attendance of training events.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a Master’s degree in a mental health discipline plus two years post Master’s experience in the mental health field, or Doctorate degree.
• Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work Licensed in New Jersey to provide mental health services as an independent practitioner (e.g., LCSW, LPC, LMFT, psychology license).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrates competency in recognizing the unique needs and behavior of children (5 – 12 years) and adolescents (13 – 18 years).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred.
• Licensure in mental health discipline preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• This position requires the ability to walk throughout the day, stand for extended periods of time, and focus on assigned tasks in a hectic noisy environment.

• The work environment varies and includes office and community settings. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. May be exposed to clients exhibiting assaultive or aggressive behaviors. Generally pleasant working conditions in a clean, well- lighted, and quiet to moderately loud setting.

Special Conditions

• Valid driver’s license required.
• Position requires flexible scheduling including evening and Saturday hours on occasion.
