Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Business Specialist for the School of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office. This position is under the broad guidance of the Business Manager III and coordinates financial administration of the School of Arts and Science (SAS) state and non-state budget for assigned departments. The Business Specialist performs the processes and actions necessary for administering accounts (includes: state-budgeted, designated, auxiliary, restricted, plant, endowed, and grant) for assigned SAS Units.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Serves as a financial system level 2 approver of requisitions, Expense reports and JE, and approves/prepares operating and payroll action documents for SAS units.
• Responsible for coordination of tracking, funds transfers and proper utilization of state and non-state salary and operating budgets supporting activities such as faculty research support, departmental instructional budgets, salary replacement costs, faculty summer research salaries and departmental programmatic and operating budgets.
• Monitors the overall State budget status monthly, identifying and resolving problems as needed.
• Acts as a liaison to ensure the integration of these activities with corresponding functions at the departmental and university levels.
• Performs professional work requiring knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP), and a good understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology and applied bases of accounting.
• Maintains a working knowledge of individual SAS unit activities in order to provide appropriate approvals and oversight.
• Reviews accounts and budget reports of assigned departments on a regular basis ensure proper funds have been received and no unforeseen overages have occurred.
• Identifies and resolves business problems and discrepancies.
• Provides departmental administrators with business support as required on the day-to-day management of their operating and salary budgets.
• Works in tandem with business colleagues to research, collect and organize data for reports.
• Contributes to risk assessment and strategic planning initiatives at both the departmental and SAS levels.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a bachelor’s degree preferably in business administration, finance, accounting or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices, accounting and financial functions, administration, work organization, and coordination of multiple demands.
• Also requires two years relevant professional experience in an accounting, financial or budgetary function, excellent communication and organization skills, and computer literacy.

• A driver’s license and use of a personal car are recommended to attend to business on all New Brunswick campuses.

• Ability to travel to all RU-NB campuses.
