Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Researcher IV – CLIA for The Human Genetics Institute of New Jersey (HGINJ). This individual is responsible for performing experiments in accordance with established protocols. The job will entail consultation, execution and analysis of a variety of technologies in the genomics arena. The candidate operates and maintains sophisticated biotechnology and laboratory equipment.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Provides routine molecular biology support in the RUCDR. Principal support will be provided for gene expression, SNP genotyping, microarrays, next-generation sequencing and clinical sample processing.
• Develops standard operating procedures and develop protocols for genomic applications.
• Performs bench work at an expert level and interpret and prepare data reports as needed.
• Implements quality control processes throughout various workflows and manage projects in order to achieve accurate results.
• Maintains associated instruments in good working order including supply and consumable maintenance.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience relevant research experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must have basic knowledge of the particular research discipline; skills are normally acquired through an accumulation of work experience and/or specific work related training programs.
• Good communication skills and computer literacy are required.
• Detailed working knowledge of molecular biology reagents and instrumentation.
• Excellent written and communication skills.
• A qualified candidate will be capable of working independently to perform gene expression, genotyping and sequencing analyses.
• A concentration in molecular biology and high throughput genomics applications, including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, real-time quantitative PCR, high throughput SNP genotyping, microarrays, sequencing, and other molecular biology assays.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience with molecular biology techniques using DNA, RNA and protein is desirable.
• Industry experience is also desirable.
• Favorable consideration will be given to those applicants with three years’ experience performing molecular biology experiments including cDNA synthesis, microarrays, SNP genotyping, sequencing, RT-RCR, basic cloning, hybridization procedures, and other related assays.

• Fluidigm Biomark HR real time PCR platform, Biomek FX (fluid robotics); Ion-Torrent DNA sequencer; Illumina HiSeq, MiSeq and NextSeq Bead Array Genome Analyzers; Illumina iScan array scanner; Caliper Sciclone Next Generation robotic genomic sequencer; Caliper G-X Gene Chip RNA and DNA separation apparatus; ABI thermocyclers; Affymetrix Gene Titan microarray instrumentation.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Requires occasional weekend, evening, and holiday hours; must have excellent manual dexterity skills; will work with bio-hazardous materials.
• Must be able to lift light to medium weight objects and work with low-level background noise from instrumentation.
• Must be able to read and understand technical documents, operate scientific instruments and computers, perform detailed work, and manage multiple tasks.
