Overview

Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.


Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Physician Specialist II, Per Diem for the Adult Medical Services at Rutgers, University Correctional Health Care.

Responsible for providing medical services to inmates of the Department of Corrections, which are consistent with community standards of care. Serves as liaison for clinical matters with medical providers outside of the system and must be available to provide on-call services.

• Reports to assigned State Prison at designated hour to examine referred patients.
• Provides emergency care, routine medical care, preventive medical care and education to patients.
• Assures implementation and ongoing status of on-site chronic clinics.
• Rounds daily in the infirmary and documents patient’s status in the progress notes of the infirmary medical record.
• In conjunction with site Medical Director, prescribes medications from the formulary for inmate’s healthcare needs.
• In cooperation with Medical Director, provides professional consultation to all members of Health Services team relative to inmate’s health care management.
• Participates in development of in-service programs and maintains public relations with other healthcare disciplines.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Must be a licensed physician in the State of New Jersey.
• Current DEA registration and CDS and CPR certifications.
• Must be eligible for Board certification and qualified by the state laws/regulations to practice medicine.
• Experienced in a primary care specialty.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must have experience with Microsoft Office.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Must be able to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments, the ability to type and use a computer to enter in the Electronic Medical Records, and the ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position. Also must be able to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position, to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, and your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects, to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, can quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine to exact positions. Frequently walks, bends, stretches, pushes and pulls. Intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities. Manual dexterity and mobility for charting (typing). Ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions.

• The work environment is a fast paced and requires ability to relate well to the patients, security staff and health care team members, to work in a secure environment with adults, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and assaultive behaviors, to handle emergency and crisis situations. Incumbent must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. Risk of body fluid exposure. Must be able to maneuver around architectural barriers and obstructions found in a prison environment. Could be exposed to fumes, toxics, outdoor weather conditions and vibrations and moving mechanical parts. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

• Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation to travel from one site to another.
• Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
