Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Researcher III for The School of Arts and Sciences Department of Kinesiology & Health. The research coordinator assists the PI in conducting professional level experiments and research with human participants and will manage other research assistants. This involves the recruitment and screening of potential participants, helps coordinate with the Clinical Research Center and Sleep Medicine Clinic to carry out data collection, collects data directly from participants, data entry and database management, IRB submissions and compliance, orders necessary equipment and resources, and maintains/tracks existing equipment. In addition, the research coordinator trains, oversees and manages several research assistants to ensure that data is being accurately collected and entered. Work will be reviewed by the PI.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Coordinates with the Clinical Research Center and Sleep Medicine Clinic to carry out data collection (this includes guiding participants through protocols involving neurobehavioral tests, blood draws, eating behavior paradigms, measurements of metabolism, polysomnography).
• Collects data directly from participants and interacts with participants throughout the study to ensure compliance and maintain a good relationship between study staff and study participant.
• Helps the PI in hiring qualified research assistants, set a shift schedule for research assistants, train them on how to collect data and interact with participants, oversee their work in order to ensure that data is being accurately collected and entered, communicate with the PI if there are any personnel issues.
• Recruits (via the creation of mailers, ads, posts, flyers etc.) adolescents and adults for participation in studies, conduct phone screens to check eligibility and schedule assessments.
• Submits all proposals to IRB for review and approval, ensure that are ongoing studies are compliant with IRB regulations.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a bachelor’s degree preferably in a biology or psychology or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience and a minimum of two years research experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must have a sound understanding of IRB submissions/compliance, scientific data collection and entry, and good management skills.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Word, PowerPoint and Excel).

Preferred Qualifications

• A Master’s degree involving scientific research or at least 2 years of full-time research experience with human subjects.
• It is preferred that applicants have experience in research related to sleep, metabolism, or obesity but this is not required.

Equipment Utilized

• It is preferred that applicants have experience working with wrist actigraphy, waist accelerometry, polysomnography, and/or working with a Clinical Research Center to collect blood and metabolic data.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• This position will primarily be conducted at the computer in an office setting, however it will also involve meeting with nurses and participants around campus, posting flyers for recruitment etc.
