Posting Summary

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a lab technician for the Department of Animal Sciences, Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. to work in the laboratory of Dr. Nicholas T. Bello.
This position involves, but is not limited to, carrying out and facilitating research in behavioral and systems physiology, as well as general laboratory management.
Responsible for:
ordering of supplies, preparation of reagents, performing laboratory experiments involving rodents, tissue preparation, HPLC, electrophysiology, DNA, RNA, and protein analysis, as well as organization of lab records and maintenance of the equipment, in consultation with Principal Investigator and department administration.
General Summary:
• Under the immediate guidance and direction of a senior technician or other supervisor, provides routine technical support relative to scientific research work or projects of a laboratory and/or teaching program.
• Collects and completes basic preparation of samples and specimens.
• Performs standard and repetitive physical, chemical, and biological tests on materials, substances, and/or living subjects. Prepares media, substances, solutions, and reagents and performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience. An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.
Requires a practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques, and the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
Must be able to communicate effectively. Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs. May require a valid driver’s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Prior experience in all or some of the following: rodent handling, behavioral assays, molecular biology, and brain chemical analysis. Experience training high school, undergraduate, or graduate students basic laboratory technique.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to communicate effectively with others in writing and verbally. Self-motivated and enthusiastic. Moderate work hour flexibility (occasional weekend or evening work). Bookkeeping aptitude is desirable.
