Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Public Healthcare Representative III for the Population Science department at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The Public Healthcare Representative II supports all aspects of research efforts in epidemiology projects, including subject recruitment, conducting home or site visits to another mutually agree location, interviewing, phlebotomy, biospecimen collection and processing, maintaining databases, interfacing with IRB, and monitoring the progress toward achieving study goals. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Responsible for contacting participants, scheduling and conducting home visits, and interviewing study subjects by telephone or in person, using structured questionnaires, organizing telephone schedule and call records to participants, and performing other related duties as needed.
• Collects, handles, processes (e.g., spins and aliquots blood samples), transfers, and ships biospecimens (e.g., blood, saliva) from participants following study protocols and IATA and OSHA safety requirements.
• Maintains participant’s records in electronic database and ensures their confidentiality.
• Participates in study meetings and all phases of the study, including recruitment activities.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health related science required.
• Phlebotomy Technician or Medical Assistant Certification required with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in phlebotomy and handling of biospecimens.
• Demonstrated phlebotomy skills (greater than ten (10) years of phlebotomy experience and passing competency test at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey) can substitute certification.
• Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Prior field experience in medical research and project management an asset.
• Candidate must be highly motivated, have effective oral and written communication skills; must be a team player; must be highly attentive to detail and very organized.
• Ability to motivate and recruit participants into the study required.
• Possesses own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another. Requires extensive travel, ability to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends), as needed, to reach and complete data and biospecimen collection with study subjects required.
• Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in clinical and/or epidemiologic research, project management and health/clinical background are a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands:
Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 30lbs.

Work Environment:
Office environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Special Conditions

• Requires extensive travel to conduct home or site visits for data collection and/or to participate in recruiting activities and working evenings and weekends.
