Overview

Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Specialist IV, Per Diem for the Child & Adolescent Services – Education at Rutgers, University Behavioral Health Care.

Participates as a member of the Child Therapeutic Day School staff providing therapeutic and special education services to children.

• Assists Special Education Teacher in the classroom providing education services to children.
• Helps implement the classroom behavior management system.
• Participates in the development of children’s individual Treatment Plan.
• Provides behavior crisis prevention and intervention, as needed, including personal restraints (once trained) and conducting debriefing discussions.
• Provides ongoing supervision of children individually and in groups at arrival, dismissal, during lunch, and throughout the day.
• Assists children with self-care skills and activities of daily living, encouraging developmentally appropriate, independent behavior.
• Drives children in cars or minivans.
• Completes required clinical documentation thoroughly and on time.
• Participates in staff development that meets individual learning needs.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Must have successfully completed one year training program as a Mental Health Specialist Trainee or one year of similar full-time experience in the mental health field
• An Associate’s degree, preferably in a related field, including 12 credits in human services, such as psychology or its equivalent, may be substituted for the minimum requirements of this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience with children (3½ – 21 years).
• Classroom experience.

Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Employee must be physically active and be on feet most of the day. Duties may involve running and playing active games with children and adolescents (3½ – 21 years), driving mini vans or other vehicles. Following training, employee must be physically capable of safely providing personal restraint to agitated children.

• The work environment is crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, and staff moving about.

Special Conditions

• Must undergo criminal history background check at employee’s expense as required by NJ State Law.
