Overview

Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Specialist III, Per Diem for Outpatient Services – Residential at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.

The primary purpose of the Mental Health Specialist III is to ensure the safety of residents and assist them in carrying out activities of daily living.

• As required by individual program, assumes direct care responsibilities for consumer residents and provides crisis intervention, skills building, and psycho-educational services.
• Provides input into the development of Individualized Service Plans/Recovery Plans.
• Coordinates with supervisor and residential staff to implement residential service plan goals for residents.
• Engages consumer/residents in appropriate interventions based on Service Plan and supervisory directive.
• Demonstrates the ability to identify potential crisis situations in advance of occurrence and seeks out supervisory direction.
• Conducts rounds and documents as per supervisory directive.
• Drives consumers to appointments, shopping, recreation activities and Self Help meetings.
• Completes progress notes in consumer resident’s chart as per regulatory requirement and supervisory directive.
• Completes all forms, residential logs, medication records, incident reports, and correspondence as per regulatory requirement and as directed by supervisor.
• Collaborates effectively with other staff members, referral sources, other service providers, and social support networks to provide services and rehabilitative care for consumer/residents and families as required by program.

Minimum Education and Experience

• A high school diploma or its equivalent plus four years of related work or life experience required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• This position requires the employee to walk and climb stairs throughout the residence during the course of the shift to confer with residential clients and staff. In a scattered site setting, provides outreach in the community in the consumer’s home located throughout the county. The employee is expected to drive throughout the week to locations in the community – to grocery stores, 12 Step Meetings and recreational activities. Must be able to up to 25 lbs.

• The work environment is located in community based housing that may include suburban type one family or duplex housing, clustered apartment building or High Rise Apartment building. Crisis intervention required at times. Subject to unpredictable situations, patient crises, both medical and psychiatric. Occasionally exposed to patients exhibiting assaultive behaviors. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment.
