Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Associate General Counsel in the Office of the Senior Vice President and General Counsel. This attorney’s primary focus is defending the University and its employees in litigation. The key duties of this position are the following:

• Defends the University on a wide variety of litigation matters (a substantial portion of which involves employment matters), often in coordination with outside counsel.
• Advises senior administrators on matters in anticipation of litigation.
• Provides advice, education and counsel on a wide variety of legal issues that affect a public institution of higher education, including OPRA, OPMA, and FERPA.
• Analyzes and evaluates pending legislation and regulations to determine if they apply to the University and, if so, their impact on the University.
• Collaborates with the Department of External affairs in developing and advancing the University’s interests and positions in response to pending legislation and regulations.
• Provides advice and guidance pertaining to drafting and reviewing University-wide policies and procedures.
• Collaborates with University risk management on insurance, indemnification and related issues.
• Assists with and participates in training and preventative law presentations for University administrators, managers and staff.
• Assumes responsibility for a wide variety of additional legal projects and matters as requested by the General Counsel.
• Performs various other tasks and duties to support General Counsel.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a superior academic credentials and a JD degree from an accredited law school.
• Also requires at least eight years of relevant experience of increasing responsibility.
• Must either be admitted to practice law in New Jersey or admitted in another jurisdiction and willing and able to become admitted in New Jersey as soon as practicable.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must possess a wide range of knowledge and experience in litigation, with significant experience in employment matters.
• Must have excellent communication skills, excellent writing skills, be able to work with colleagues both within the Office of General Counsel and within the University as a whole.
• Must be comfortable taking responsibility for addressing complex legal issues within the context of a vibrant and ever-evolving institution of higher education.
• Regular exercise of strategic decision-making and independent sound judgment as applied to complex and nuanced factual scenarios required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience representing public sector clients or working as an attorney in the public sector a plus.
