Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for Department of Biological Sciences at the College of Arts & Sciences.

The Laboratory Technician will be working under the immediate supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and be responsible for the routine and repetitive conduct of any commonly used research procedures required to determine. The person in this role will assist in organizing and coordinating daily laboratory operations and providing oversight of routine laboratory functions, ensures staff and student compliance with all relevant safety procedures and other applicable regulations, informs the PI of any equipment and/or facility issues in a timely manner. This position is dependent on adequate funding.

Some duties include but are not limited to:
- Collects and prepares samples and materials for microscopy as needed and includes fixation, immunostaining, and mounting samples
- Performs routine imaging of samples and processing
- Maintains and updates records of experimental manipulation, procedures and results performed and obtained by said technician
- Train and supervise the participants of the IMAGE Outreach program, such as but not limited to: undergraduate, graduate, high school, other staff/faculty
- Maintain and operate a tissue culture and microscopy facility and provide oversight and facilitation for the faculty member’s research group during the academic year and will for the IMAGE program during the summer session.
- Adjusts, calibrates, minor repairs of laboratory equipment and ensures equipment is in appropriate condition and maintained in a clean, safe manner in accordance with established procedures
- Maintains equipment, supply, and chemical inventories for assigned laboratories

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience.

An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

Requires a practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques

Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.

Must be able to communicate effectively.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related scientific field

Relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols, and tests, or other technical work.

Experience with eukaryotic tissue culture, 3D imaging, image deconvolution, indirect immunofluorescence staining is a plus.

Knowledge of Zeiss Axiovision software, Knowledge of Volocity image processing software.

American Association of laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Assistant Laboratory-Animal Technician certification

Equipment Utilized

Light microscopes

The technician will utilize laboratory equipment including pH meters, balances, centrifuges, microscopes, machining, lathe, autoclave, and advanced aquatic life support systems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Requires the ability to life and move up to 30 pounds.

May require a valid driver’s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.

Must adhere to University policy and procedures on Protection of Minors.

Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.

Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.

Special Conditions
