Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

We are currently seeking a Mental Health Specialist III for the Child & Adolescent Services – Partial Hospitalization – Outpatient Division. The Mental Health Specialist III will provide daily direct care services to the program’s consumers as directed by the unit supervisor. Provides appropriate assistance and renders services in accordance with UBHC policies and procedure in a culturally competent and person centered manner. Actively participates in crisis interventions.

• Provides direct care responsibilities for individuals served as assigned.
• Engages consumer/patient in appropriate intervention; interacts and communicates with individuals served in a wellness and recovery focused manner.
• Facilitates daily living skills groups and therapeutic activities.
• Maintains appropriate consumer/patient records as mandated by policy and applicable accrediting organization standards.
• Collaborates with staff from school districts and other UBHC personnel in developing activities to ensure safety of all students.
• Makes home and school visits as indicated by treatment team.
• Maintains knowledge of UBHC and Unit policies and procedures; contributes to and supports the mission and goals of UBHC; meets all annual requirements.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Associate’s degree and two (2) years of experience in the provision of appropriate services to youth and/or related experience; or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant social or mental health field; or a high school diploma and five (5) years experience in the provision of appropriate services to youth.

Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrates competence in recognizing the unique needs and behaviors of children with emotional and/or developmental needs.
• Maintains professional, effective, open, constructive and solution focused communication with members of the interdisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Must be able to lift up to seventy (70) pounds multiple times a day.
• Time spent in a school environment.
• Some travel to client homes and community agencies.
• Program and classroom setting is active and sometimes noisy.
• Varied settings in home. Subject to unpredictable situations, patient crisis, both medical and psychiatric.
• Occasionally exposed to consumers exhibiting assaultive behaviors.
• Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens that require use of personal protective equipment.

Special Conditions

• Valid driver’s license required.
