Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Clinician III for the Early Intervention Support Services Program at Rutgers, University Behavioral Health Care. Reports to the Program Coordinator.

The primary purpose of the EISS Mental Health Clinician III position is to directly provide assessments and individual, group and family therapy and discharge planning for the adult consumers who seek services from the EISS program. In addition, the EISS Mental Health Clinician III will assume on-call responsibilities for the program on a rotating basis.

• Involves the consumer and that consumer’s family or other support system in developing achievable, understandable, and person-centered treatment plans in accordance with accepted professional standards and UBHC standards, as observed by supervisor.
• In collaboration with supervisor and other clinical staff, identifies appropriate resources for consumers and families/support system based on assessed needs in accordance with professionally accepted standards as measured by supervisory observation and record review.
• Provides individual, group and family crisis intervention and therapy for consumers enrolled in the EISS program.
• By utilizing evidenced-based therapeutic techniques such as Illness Management and Recovery (IMR), supports consumers to achieve stabilization in their respective recovery efforts.
• Collaborates with other treatment team members to plan treatment interventions which focus on consumer strengths.
• Provides outreach services as assigned by Program Coordinator.
• Assumes on-call responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
• Assumes overall follow-up responsibilities for assigned consumers including coordination of treatment and liaison with community agencies as measured by supervisory observation and review.
• Maintains appropriate consumer records in a timely manner as mandated by Center policy.
• Collaborates with consumers, their respective support systems, and other members of the treatment team in discharge planning.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a Master’s degree in a mental health discipline.
• Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to work with a treatment team is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Post graduate experience working with adults in a crisis setting preferred.
• Experience with DSM-IV-TR and appropriate diagnostic skills preferred.
CADC/LCADC preferred.
• Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• This position requires frequently walking, bending, stretching, pushing, pulling and lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds. It also requires occasional time spent driving to community settings for outreaches. Manual dexterity and mobility for charting is needed. May sit up to several hours in one place. Working with seriously mentally ill adults.

• The work environment varies to include office and community setting. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. May be exposed to clients exhibiting assaultive or aggressive behaviors. Generally pleasant working conditions in a clean, well-lighted, and quiet to moderately loud setting.

Special Conditions

• Must be available for on-call.
• Valid driver’s license required.
