The New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) is the research and outreach arm of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Through NJAES, faculty from Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences conduct research that directly addresses significant issues facing agriculture, fisheries, food, nutrition and health, and related areas of economic and workforce development across New Jersey. Rutgers Cooperative Extension agents and specialists develop educational programs and other means to deliver research-based solutions to improve the economic, health, and personal well-being of New Jersey’s residents and businesses

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Farm Supervisor III for Horticulture Farm 3 on Cook Campus. This position manages the daily tasks and duties involved in the operation of a New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) research farm.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Assist in the farm’s long range planning, as well as closely interact with and provide technical assistance to faculty project leaders as it relates to the successful implementation of their field research programs.
• Works with the Research Farm Manager, Faculty Director, faculty researchers, and farm staff to ensure successful implementation and completion of research and demonstration projects on 70 acres of land and related greenhouses.
• Supervises and trains farm staff in all duties related to the farm’s daily operations, including: research level pesticide and fertilizer application, operation and maintenance of irrigation systems, grounds maintenance, and on-farm greenhouse operations.
• Maintains accurate records of farm activities, expenses, compliance documentation, and other records required to assess farm performance and compliance with University, NJAES/unit, state and federal regulations.
• Ensures that all farm systems and equipment are maintained in good working order.
• Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and repair parts.
• Develops good list of and working relationships with key equipment/service/ supply vendors.
• Provides overall leadership for all farm duties including, but not limited to, snow removal from farm, lawn maintenance, building maintenance and landscaping, pest control, plot preparation and maintenance, and other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Applicant should also have a minimum of two years’ experience in a farm environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated experience with the establishment and maintenance of field experiments.
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel) and web-based applications required.
• Valid New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Commercial Pesticide Applicators license (category 1A) required.
• Strong communication skills are required.
• Valid NJ driver’s license required.
• Must pass the University’s defensive driving course within three months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strongly prefer 5 years of experience staff supervision/management on farms with acreage >= 70 acres.
• Research farm experience strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of NJDEP regulations that affect farm operations.
• Excellent people skills with keen attention to detail and accuracy required for supervision of field staff.
• Extensive knowledge of pesticides, fertilizers, soil conservation and greenhouse operations.
NJDEP certification for worker protection standard training.

Equipment Utilized

• Computers and associated software including word processing, spreadsheet and web-based applications.
• Wide variety of farm equipment including, but not limited to, tractors, mowers, irrigation systems, pesticide sprayers, data logger software, electronic test equipment for troubleshooting and greenhouse equipment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Must be able to work in the hot humid conditions of farm fields and greenhouses.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
• Must be able to climb and work on a ladder.
• Must be able to walk the fields and greenhouses for work and inspection.
