Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Public Relations Specialist to report to the Director of Public and Media Relations. This position promotes and creates content across the flagship campus’s website, traditional and social media and other platforms and assists with the day-to-day operations of the Office of Public and Media Relations, including conducting media outreach, fielding media queries, serving as university spokesperson and serving as media liaison at events. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Identifies key areas to publicize and is responsible for conceptualizing, researching and producing a full range of written, visual, audio, social and other content.
• Writes news releases, media advisories and other content, pitches the media and evaluates media opportunities and requests for media exposure in context with the university’s mission and message points, and develops innovative and strategic approaches for raising the university’s visibility among key constituencies.
• Provides direction, coordination and support for communication and public relations efforts across campus.
• Advises faculty and administrators on media relations training and opportunities.
• Works with other University units to develop messages and content for key initiatives and audiences and determines the best channels to deliver those messages.
• Cultivates relationships with the campus community and news organizations that are the most important to attaining communications goals.
• Works with the Director to develop reports and tools for conveying to leadership and clients the effectiveness of the department’s news and social media programs.
• Covers assigned areas and manages relevant issues in a timely manner and innovative ways.
• Exercises leadership, good decision-making and prudence in dealing with campus constituencies and the media.
• Conveys broad knowledge of the university and in-depth knowledge of assigned beats.
• Identifies faculty experts for the media and responds quickly to media requests.
• Keeps abreast of emerging issues and briefs the Director as necessary.
• Completes various other tasks and duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience in media relations, communications, journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must be a self-starter, strategic thinker, proven problem-solver and value collaboration.
• Must be able to quickly assess issues and crises and to develop and execute effective plans to address them.
• Must be able to handle multiple competing priorities and work confidently, diplomatically and decisively under stress.
• Must have experience developing and executing short- and long-term communications plans.
• Requires experience directly engaging news reporters.
• Strong interpersonal skills in organizational settings and written and verbal communications skills are required.
• Must work as part of a team, yet be capable of independent action and judgment in the daily execution of duties, including pitching and responding to the media and managing media-related events, as well as in advising faculty and administrators.
• Requires an advanced knowledge of generating content and contributing to strategy within a large and complex organization.
• Valid driver’s license required and must be willing to use a personal car for University business.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with academic institutions desirable.
• Experience using data to influence decisions and to report effectiveness is desired.
• National media contacts a plus.
• Experience as a communications professional at an institute of higher education is preferred, but not required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Will be on-call periodically during early morning hours, evenings, weekends and holidays.
• May be required to work from home or other off-site locations.
