Posting Summary

Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is seeking an Ambulatory Care Technician (ACT) for the Department of Medicine – Infectious Disease Practice. The primary purpose of the position is to provide medical assistance to nurses and physicians in the overall care of patients, including technical procedures, such as phlebotomy, and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. Functions under the direct supervision and authority of the physician, when performing clinical tasks during patient care. Assists with receptionist, telephone, and filing duties.

• Obtains and records patient’s vital signs; reports screening findings to practitioner, and records on appropriate documentation forms.
• Monitors patient status and reports abnormal findings or changes in condition.
• As directed by physician, administers approved medications, including vaccinations, via intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
• Provides appropriate patient education, health information materials, and community resources; identifies patient’s need(s) for additional information and refers to appropriate healthcare resources.
• Maintains an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies, assists in the organization of efficient patient flow, and organizes the clinic environment to assure patient safety.
• Greets patients, answers telephones, and schedules patient appointments.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Graduation of a post-secondary medical assisting education program, accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• Current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT), or any recognized certifying body approved by the Board.

Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey, in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrates competency in all skills, related to the performance of patient care.
• Must have attained a satisfactory level of comprehension and experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.
• Displays responsible behaviors, communicates effectively to others and functions as a member of the healthcare team.
• Demonstrates problem-solving skills, as they relate to patient care activities, provides guidance for and acts as a role model for Medical Assistants in the clinical area.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least one (1) year of related experience in a medical office setting is preferred.
NJDHSS HIV counselor certification is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of Newark community is preferred.
• Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are preferred.

Equipment Utilized

• Computer literacy with competence in Microsoft Office components.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten pounds.
• Assists with transportation services in the clinic.
• Occasional exposure to blood-borne pathogens, that requires use of personal protective equipment.
