Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Dean of Students and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

The Dean of Students and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs:

• Responsible for the general oversight of the student life experience.
• Manages a core group of offices and responsibilities which significantly contribute to the strategic goals of the Division of Student Affairs.
• Advocates for student interests and leads in the creation of programs, services, assessment and experiences that holistically promote student development.
• Collaborates with key constituents across the University to represent student interests and to create and support programs, policies and procedures that are student centered and that support the strategic plan of Rutgers University-Newark.
• Works collaboratively with the Division of Student Affairs leadership to support the Division’s mission and goals.
• Core member of Vice Chancellor’s leadership team, represents the Division of Student Affairs in the absence of the Vice Chancellor, and attends meetings and/or participates in committees as required.
• Directly supervises the following offices within the Division of Student Affairs: Student Life and Leadership (includes: Student Leadership Development, Student Organization Advising, Greek Advising, Veterans Affairs, New Student Orientation, Family Programming and Community Engagement), Student Conduct and Community Standards, LGBTQ and Intercultural Resources, Residence Life, and International Student Services.
• Chairs the RU-N CARE Team.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a Master’s Degree in Higher Education or Student Affairs and/or related degree and a minimum of 5 years of Director level experience in student affairs administration.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, the ability to work well with parents, students, and a variety of campus constituencies, excellent judgment and supervisory skills, the ability to make independent decisions, and a high degree of comfort and skill in working with a diverse student population. This position will be required to work some weeknights and weekends, as needed. Also, this position will be included in the on-call emergency rotation for the CARE Team.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer 6+ years of Director level experience in student affairs administration.

Equipment Utilized

The Assistant Vice Chancellor will regularly use Microsoft Office Applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access. Other software used is Maxient conduct software and Baseline software used for assessment through Campus Labs. The person should also be familiar with and be able to utilize online social media sources such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and others.
