The Office of Research and Economic Development provides services across Rutgers to support the faculty’s research and strategically leads the university’s economic development activities.

Rutgers experienced impressive growth in research grants and sponsored programs last year. Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Veterinary Technologist within the Comparative Medicine Resources for the Office of Research Advancement. This position provides technical support to the veterinarians in caring for a wide range of animal species.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Performs a broad range of duties typical of both a veterinary clinical care and research setting.
• Performs treatment, diagnostic laboratory procedures, and necropsy; keeps records and does rodent breeding and colony management.
• May assist in or perform surgery.
• May train, observe and monitor research personnel.
• Performs routine veterinary care and support including, but not limited to: animal exams, dental prophylaxis, collection of biological samples, basic surgical procedures, etc. on a wide variety of species.
• Administers medications/treatments to affected animals throughout the University.
• Assists with training of investigators and research staff regarding surgical and scientific techniques as well as federal and local regulations;
• Makes routine rounds of facilities and labs to ensure animal health.
• Prepares, performs, and submits labwork as needed.
• Orders and maintains inventory of drugs, surgical, and veterinary supplies.
• Provides assistance to the University laboratory animal veterinarians in their duties.
• Maintains records, inventory, and disposition of both federally controlled substances and uncontrolled prescription drugs.
• Collects biological and blood samples from sentinel or sick animals.
• Provides antibody production services to research staff, including antigen injection and blood collection from a variety of species.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a bachelor’s degree preferably in veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or other related science; Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Plus two (2) years’ experience in a laboratory or animal care facility.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Individual must be AALAS certified, at minimum, at the LAT level.
• New Jersey driver’s license and two years of driving experience.
• Must participate in the occupational health program for animal workers, which requires a pre-placement medical evaluation.
• Must undergo criminal background check in order to work with controlled substances (e.g. narcotics, barbiturates).

Preferred Qualifications

• Two years’ experience preferably including work in both small animal veterinary practices and the animal research environment.
• Certification or licensure as a Veterinary Technician in another state is desirable. (New Jersey does not license or certify veterinary technicians)
• Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at LATg level.
• Experience with restraint, handling and veterinary care of farm animal species.
