Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Principal Medical Records Clerk for The Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Maintains the security and confidentiality of patient medical records as per HIPAA requirements.
• Performs multiple functions within the department such as retrieving, preparing, maintaining, filing, thinning, auditing and archiving patient medical records.
• Prepares and scans material into other media and/or electronic medical record.
• Contributes to the Research mission and participates in performance improvements activities.
• Supports the medical records functions of patients in all age categories from infants through geriatrics and all patient populations with a focus on patients with cancer.

Minimum Education and Experience

• A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• At least two (2) years of prior Medical Record/HIM clerical experience required.
• Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
• Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
• Demonstrated ability for self-learning to continually improve skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Training either as a medical records technician, medical assistant, or nursing assistant is desirable.
• Prior experience with an electronic medical record (EMR) is preferred.
• Knowledge of terminal digit filing is a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands:
Standing, sitting, walking, talking, or hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.

Work Environment:
Fast paced, high-pressure office/clinic/hospital environment with stringent deadlines and moderate to distracting noise. Requires the ability to work and cooperate with faculty, students, managers, employees and the public at all levels in order to exchange ideas and information. Clinical setting includes minimal exposure to blood, odors and exposure to infections and communicable diseases. Requires the ability to work with all patient populations with a primary focus on cancer.
