Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Genetic Counselor for the Medical Oncology department at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The Genetic Counselor provides genetic counseling and directs patient related activities at cancer genetic clinic. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Elicits family history information, creates three generation family history, and interprets family pedigrees with regard to hereditary cancer risk.
• Identifies most appropriate family members for genetic testing and provides cancer risk assessment for patients based on family history information.
• Using risk estimate models, calculates a patient-specific risk for a hereditary cancer syndrome based on medical and family history and explains this estimate to the patient, including the benefits and limitations of such models.
• Identifies specialized genetic laboratories and coordinates laboratory services for the purpose of genetic testing and/or DNA banking for patients and their appropriate family members.
• Interprets genetic laboratory tests for the patient, family, and referring health care providers in a meaningful and understandable way.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling required.
• New grads will be considered for this position .

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Board certified or board eligible in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
• Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
• Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in cancer genetic counseling is preferred.
• Experience using Progeny database preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands:
Sitting, standing, walking, talking or hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.

Work Environment:
Clinic environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory.
