Rutgers,The State University of New Jersey is seeking a library assistant to report directly to the Douglass Library Access Services Supervisor I.
The Library Assistant II assists with the management of the Douglass Library Access Services part-time employee staff pool; assists library users with circulation and information services at public service desks; and contributes to the development of system-wide policies and services through participation in New Brunswick Libraries’ working groups.
General summary:
Under direction, performs library clerical work of a specialist or generalist nature, involving the application of knowledge regarding online databases, software, library policies, and procedures.
Performs such work in direct support of an operating unit of a particular library and/or functional unit across multiple libraries. Maintains accurate data in the online catalog; creates online brief, control, and check-in records; locates and processes materials for reserve; assists library patrons with problems and questions; and performs related duties.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a high school/vocational school education and three years of general library, library-related, or clerical experience. Two years of college study and one year of library, database management, or information systems experience may be substituted for the three years of library experience requirement. Requires accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and multicultural work environment. Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats. Must have effective client service skills. Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds and push book trucks. May require specialist proficiencies and/or the ability to group lead.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of the Rutgers Library system and SirsiDynix products.

Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System.

Strong organizational skills.

Excellent inter-personal, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Equipment Utilized

Working knowledge of Windows-based office software applications such as spreadsheets and word processing programs. Experience with PowerPoint, HTML, and image manipulation software is desirable.
Working knowledge of basic World Wide Web searching and use of email programs.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The incumbent will be required to lift and carry books and packages weighing no more than 50 lbs.

Special Conditions

Schedule during the academic year is Tuesday through Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm and Saturday, 2:00pm – 10:00pm.
During Summer Session and Intersession periods, Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm.
