Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Library Technician II, Part Time for the George F. Smith Library of the Health Sciences.

Under the direction of the Chief of Circulation, RBHS-Smith Library, or of the Library Evening Supervisor (Library Specialist III), performs a wide range of duties, both technical and those directly related to provision of access services. This includes check-out and return of reserve and circulating items in the collection, sale of photocopy cards to the public, and performance of stack maintenance projects (print books & journals) and shelf reading.

• Staffs the Smith Library Circulation Desk during assigned work hours, answers basic user questions and checks materials
in and out of the reserve and circulating collections.
• Assists users with location of books and other library materials.
• Carries out essential functions using the libraries online catalog circulation module (SIRSI).
• Assures the all library materials are shelved in a timely manner and in their correct order.
• Provides basic instructions to library users on the operation of the equipment, such as printers and photocopy machines.
• Maintains working knowledge of credit/debit system used for vending cards.
• Understands and adheres to the Circulation Department policies and procedures, as well as those for the overall Smith Library.
• Maintains good working knowledge of the Circulation Department’s opening and closing procedures, as well as those for the overall library.
• Upon requests for access, checks borrower’s chart, and if appropriate issues barcode and PIN.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

• High school diploma required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic computer skills including basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Demonstrated ability to take and follow work direction as well as to work independently in certain situations and apply good judgment.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
• Good communication skills (oral and written).
• Demonstrated ability to check and respond to emails.

Preferred Qualifications

• Some college is preferred.
• Two (2) years of experience in a library clerical position or related work desired.
• Proficiency in using SIRSI workflows circulation module preferred.

Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Physical Demands: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift boxes or print materials (books & journals) weighing up to 20 pounds. Ability to push library materials on book trucks to shelving locations.

• Work Environment: Library settings. Moderate noise.

Special Conditions

• This position is a late evening and weekend position with the following hours: Sunday – Thursday, 9:00 PM – 2:00 AM.
