Posting Summary

The Office of STEM Education (OSE) of the School of Arts & Sciences seeks a Professor of Professional Practice at the level of Assistant Professor (preferred), but higher ranks may be considered for exceptional candidates. This is an academic year, non-tenure track position, with an initial contract of 3 years (renewable).


Minimum Education and Experience

PhD in a STEM discipline, in science education research, or in a related field. Minimum 3 years experience in assessment and evaluation or course development in STEM disciplines, including a thorough knowledge of and experience with implementing discipline based education research, including dissemination of findings through conference presentations, workshops, and peer-reviewed journal publications. A proven track record in obtaining external funding is preferred, but not required.

The primary responsibilities will be to oversee implementation of discipline based education research (DBER) in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, oversee assessment and evaluation of course transformations, oversee the Physics Gateway program (instruction for underprepared students in engineering), contribute to assessment efforts of learning outcomes in specific courses and longitudinally across a program or major. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating efforts with appropriate department chairs, deans, faculty teaching courses, and with the appropriate individuals in other schools and departments whose students are served by the introductory physics courses. The candidate will be expected to contribute to STEM education research projects across disciplines through participation in the OSE TRIAD coalition ( and by leading efforts to obtain external funding to support course transformations and DBER projects. As part of the TRIAD coalition, the candidate will contribute to the professional development of faculty, postdocs, graduate teaching assistants, and undergraduate learning assistants who are teaching in or supporting transformed courses.
