Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director, Rutgers Food Innovation Center – South for The Rutgers Food Innovation Center. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of the Rutgers Food Innovation Centers, and will also be responsible to integrate the activities of the Food Innovation Center-South, with the statewide and global outreach objectives established by the Executive Director. The Director of the Rutgers NJAES Food Innovation Center – South will lead this high-profile and globally recognized program at Rutgers University, and maintain its mission of stimulating and supporting sustainable economic growth and prosperity to the food and agricultural industries in the New Jersey region by providing businesses with innovative research, customized practical solutions, and a trusted source for information and guidance. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• Oversees all full-time, part-time and temporary/hourly staff at this 23,000 square foot food business incubation program located in Bridgeton (Cumberland County), NJ.
• Oversees all day-to-day business development and client services needs of the Center that ensures optimal client management, excellent outcomes, and outstanding customer service. This includes human resources, operations, maintenance, capital improvements, food safety, regulatory, finance, accounting, administrative and other needs of the Food Innovation Center – South, including all internal and external financial support.
• Responsible for all client recruitment (sales) and marketing activities, and client management oversight, that results in revenues to the Center, and will continually seek new sources of additional funding for the facility, staffing, equipment, services and operations, that includes grant, and other public and private opportunities.
• Leads efforts at the Center that result in an ongoing pipeline of satisfied clients, based on a strategy of client recruitment, engagement, ongoing mentoring and excellent customer service.
• Provides input to the strategy and development of all contractual agreements with clients, and will ensure that client agreements for Business Mentoring, Facility Usage, Office Space Rental, or other agreements that may be necessary, are in place and signed by the appropriate authorities at Rutgers, and that all provisions of these agreements are being properly managed.
• Ensures that the mentoring skills important to the success of incubator clients are being effectively implemented, including business planning, marketing assistance, financing strategies, operations strategies, quality assurance and regulatory guidance, and technical assistance.
• Oversees all day-to-day and longer-term aspects of the operations, technology, regulatory, safety, engineering, capital improvements and ongoing maintenance issues associated with the usage of the facility by Food Innovation Center clients. This includes the management and oversight of all aspects of facility operations, including all regulatory and food safety requirements that occur at the 23,000 square foot business incubator’s physical facility at 450 East Broad Street in Bridgeton, NJ.
• Oversees all food processing operations that occur, which includes interaction with all clients and resolution of any operations challenges, and the oversight of all contracted employees.
• Manages the incubator facility’s day-to-day activities and requirements, including the scheduling and management of client activities and the oversight of engineering, maintenance and sanitation staff to ensure that the clients’ needs are appropriately and responsibly managed and maintained.
• Develops new programs in training, business and technical mentoring, and facility usage to meet the needs of the food industry and their ongoing needs.
• Engages and interact with stakeholders to expand and enhance the programs of the Food Innovation Center – South, and to cooperate with programs offered by community partners.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires Bachelor’s Degree in food science, business administration, engineering, economics, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Must have at least five years’ experience in various aspects of the food industry including: corporate management, new product development, facility operations, food safety, and budgeting.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Candidate must demonstrate strong leadership skills, strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to a team approach, and a proven ability in organization development and management.
• Candidate must demonstrate an ability to develop strategies, manage multiple projects, and interface with multiple public in a harmonious manner.
• Candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and a proven work record that evidences the successful management of an increasing level of responsibilities.
• Excellent personnel skills are needed to hire, supervise, motivate and terminate staff, as required.
• Candidate must be thoroughly familiar with the process of developing a comprehensive business plan and feasibility analysis for clients, and be familiar with specialty food marketing and distribution systems.
• Entrepreneurial and niche marketing experience in the food industry, and an understanding of agricultural based businesses in New Jersey and the Northeast region, are highly desirable.
• Experience with startup businesses is desired, as is an in-depth understanding of small business issues and financial management.
• An understanding of the system of higher education and its underlying philosophy is desired.
• Skills in various computer programs that include spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software (e.g. MS Office) required
• Candidate must hold a current and valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
• This position will interact daily with sophisticated and diversified private-sector food companies that are developing new food businesses, and seeking to utilize the business incubation programs and facilities at the Food Innovation Center.
• Seasoned business development skills, industry knowledge, engineering, and process/production experience are necessary to manage these business and technology activities effectively and safely.
• The Director is the “face” of the Center, and the candidate will need to be well versed in the business/marketing, operations/engineering, and technology/safety aspects of the food industry.

Preferred Qualifications

• A Master’s degree and seven years of experience is preferred.
• Experience leading cross-functional teams in a wide array of settings preferred, ideally in some or all of the following: new business startups, mid-sized and family-run companies, multinational corporations, foodservice and retail operations, university entrepreneurship centers, and/or industry trade associations.
• Entrepreneurial and niche marketing experience in the food industry is highly desirable.
