Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Specialist III for the Department of Partial Hospital, Outpatient Services, at Rutgers University Behavorial Health Care.

The primary purpose of the Mental Health Specialist III is to provide daily direct care services to the program’s consumers as directed by the unit supervisor in accordance with all regulatory requirements and principles of Wellness and Recovery. This position also involves the transport of consumers to and from the program in addition to any other treatment related services.

• As required by individual program, assumes direct care responsibilities for consumer and provides case management counseling, crisis intervention, psycho-education, skills building, and educational services as identified by individual program.
• Assists unit staff and Program Coordinator by joining groups as a co-facilitator as deemed necessary.
• Meets with consumers as assigned to provide case management services which support the treatment team recommendations.
• Communicates with consumers demonstrating empathy and concern, as indicated by feedback from patients, families, other team members, and supervisory observation.
• Completes all forms, incident reports, and correspondence as per regulatory requirement and as directed by supervisor.
• Participates in and/or leads therapeutic groups and activities and functions as an active member of the team.
• Transports consumers in a timely and safe manner to and from program and scheduled appointments as determined by the number of incident reports, feedback from members and by supervisory review.
• Regularly attends and participates in in-service meetings and other designated training events that will enhance service delivery skills and maintain best practices as identified by individual program.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a human service field or an Associate’s Degree in a human services field with a minimum of two (2) years experience providing human services. Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands: The employee spends much time walking throughout the program, standing while facilitating groups throughout the program day, bending, and talking with consumers throughout the building. The noise level is moderate. The employee can expect to lift up to 20 pounds. Employee is expected to drive up to a 14 passenger vehicle while transporting clients to and from program or any treatment related services.

Work Environment: Crisis intervention required at times. Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic). Subject to unpredictable situations, patient crises, both medical and psychiatric. Occasionally exposed to patients exhibiting assaultive behaviors. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment.

Special Conditions

Valid driver’s license and must have CDL with passenger endorsement within ninety (90) days of employment.
