Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Clinician III for the Acute Psychiatric Services – APS within University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC).
The primary purpose of the Mental Health Clinician III position is to perform psychiatric emergency services, screening, and screening outreach assessments as well as other mental health services. Demonstrate competence in providing generic crisis assessment of individuals of all ages (birth through 65+ years) and in determining the need for any additional professional consultation. Demonstrates competence in devising an appropriate intervention/disposition plan.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
• Provides an in-depth clinical assessment for all persons serviced based upon DSM-IV criteria.
• Serves as certified screener to children ages 4-17 years and adults 18 years and over.
• Maintains appropriate clinical records in a timely manner.
• Assumes familiarity with other UBHC units, outside providers, and other pertinent organizations and resources in order to facilitate persons served needs, develop work relationships and provide information and guidance to person served.
• Contributes to and supports the mission, vision, goals and objectives of UBHC and the Acute Psychiatric Services.
• Maintains knowledge of trends and developments in the field.
• Meets annual requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Minimum of a Master’s Degree in a mental health related discipline and licensure to practice as required by New Jersey state laws governing the discipline.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work. Eligibility for certification as a Psychiatric Screener in the state of New Jersey is required.

Preferred Qualifications

One (1) year of Post-Master’s experience in a psychiatric setting preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Time spent driving to designated facilities or performing mobile outreach to interview clients and coordinate with staff, families, law enforcement, community programs and others. Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 pounds or more). Frequently walks, bends, stretches, lifts, pushes and pulls. Manual dexterity and mobility for charting and use of electronic resources. Lifts supplies/equipment/charts/patients. Sitting while interviewing clients; may sit up to several hours in one place. Frequent use of telephone for crisis calls. Ability to participate in emergency physical interventions with patients including escort, restraint and seclusion is required.

Varied work settings include office, community agencies and screening sites. Some screening sites may be located in busy hospital emergency rooms. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. May be exposed to varying or extreme temperatures.

Special Conditions

Must have a valid driver’s license.
