Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Payroll Manager for Rutgers Payroll Services. This position reports to the Associate Controller, Payroll Services in the University Controller’s organization, responsible for the overall administration of the University’s Payroll Operations unit, including coordinating the end to end processing of hourly, salaried, trades and retiree payrolls. Responsibilities include:

• Maintains payroll task list and ensure that all tasks are completed in timely manner each payroll cycle
• Manages payroll workload to meet operational requirements
• Supervises and co-ordinates activities of payroll staff
• Ensures payroll is processed in an accurate, compliant and timely manner
• Directs the preparation of payroll related documents
• Coordinates upload of various payroll files/interfaces
• Coordinates resolution of employee’s concerns in a timely manner
• Prepares and reviews payroll account reconciliations
• Oversees preparation/distribution of all payroll checks and direct deposit files/advices
• Ensures all payroll information and records are maintained in accordance with statutory requirements
• Supports all internal and external audits related to payroll
• Processes payroll checks for executive staff
• Manages, develops, and mentors staff/managers on projects and assess performance through formal periodic reviews and informal feedback.
• Manages and resolves issues relating to payroll production

Minimum Education and Experience

• Requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general accounting principles and practices.
• Requires five years experience managing in-house payroll of 1,000+ employees; and relevant professional experience in a financial/accounting, function, excellent communication skills and computer literacy.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Excellent mathematics and communication skills
• Experience with ERP payroll system software (i.e., SAP, PeopleSpft, Oracle, WorkDay, Banner, etc.)
• Experience with preparing word documents and complex excel spreadsheet
• Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience (1) recommending and developing standardized/streamlined business practices, (2) demonstrated ability to foster and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders and (3) an advanced degree/CPA preferred.
• Experience in Higher Ed preferred
