Posting Summary

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Psychiatrist I (Part Time) for the Northern State Prison located in Newark, New Jersey. The Psychiatrist I provides direct clinical care to state prisoners and functions collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

  • Provides assessments, direct clinical care and treatment planning to inmates; participates in treatment planning.
  • Conducts comprehensive psychiatrist assessments (demonstrating a review of the electronic record, psychotropic medications, history of mental illness, prior psychiatric hospitalization, suicidal, unusual, or bizarre behavior) for new admissions.
  • Orders, initiates and interprets laboratory tests according to required time frames or as medically necessary including metabolic monitoring, mood stabilizer blood levels, thyroid function, AIMS testing, and other appropriate biochemical monitoring.
  • Prescribes and renews medications that are deemed medically necessary.
  • Identifies individuals who need placement on “suicide watch” or higher levels of care.
  • Clearly documents rationale for diagnoses using DSM criteria and use of medication in related to documented diagnoses.

Minimum Education and Experience

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry with valid New Jersey Medical License, CDS and NJ DEA.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Computer Literacy, Valid Driver’s License. Possesses own vehicle or have alternative means of transportation from one site to another.

Preferred Qualifications

Forensic psychiatry preferred.

Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Typing, ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments. Ability to speak clearly and write proficiently is essential, extensive reading required, extended sitting is required. Ability to move from unit to unit within a Department of Corrections’ facilities. Lifting of up to 10 pounds, hearing and sight are essential, ability to speak clearly is required, may be required to travel within the state, ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions, On call responsibilities, ability to climb a flight of stairs is required.

A generally crisis oriented, secure environment working with inmates, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening behavior. Physician must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

Special Conditions

Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements. Employees will be subject to and must comply with all security regulations and procedures of NJ Department of Corrections and the assigned facility(ies) including, but not limited to sign in logs or electronic time clocks, searches of person and property, etc. Violations of NJ Department of Corrections and/or being banned by the Department of Corrections to work at a NJ Department of Corrections’ facility are grounds for a disciplinary action and potential termination.
