Posting Summary

Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Per Diem Physician II. The Per Diem Physician II position is responsible for providing medical services to inmates of the Department of Corrections, which are consistent with community standards of care.

  • Serves as liaison for clinical matters with medical providers outside of the system and must be available to provide on-call services.
  • Provides emergency care, routine medical care, preventative medical care and education to inmates.
  • Rounds daily in the infirmary as assigned and documents patients’ statuses in the progress notes of the infirmary medical record.
  • In conjunction with the Medical Director, prescribes medications from the formulary for inmate’s healthcare needs.
    *Provides professional consultation to all members of the Health Services team relative to inmate’s health care management.
  • Participates in development of in-service programs and maintains public relations with other health care disciplines.

Minimum Education and Experience

Licensed physician in the State of New Jersey. Current DEA registration. Current CDS Certificate required. Board certified, eligible, or qualified by the state laws/regulations to practice medicine. Experienced in a primary care specialty.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Computer literacy, a valid Driver’s License is required. Possesses own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

May be required to travel within the state. Ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions. A generally crisis oriented, secure environment working with adults, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening and assaultive behaviors. Physician must be able to function in a stressful environment and relate well to the patients, security staff and health care team members. Handle emergency and crisis situations. Incumbent must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, strains. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers.

Special Conditions

Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements. Employees will be subject to and must comply with all security regulations and procedures of NJ Department of Corrections and the assigned facility(ies) including, but not limited to sign in logs or electronic time clocks, searches of person and property, etc. Violations of NJ Department of Corrections and/or being banned by the Department of Corrections to work at a NJ Department of Corrections’ facility are grounds for a disciplinary action and potential termination.
