Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Unit Computing Specialist for the Office of Economic Development and Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2). The Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute is building an Advanced Computational Infrastructure (ACI) Ecosystem which is the core that permeates all aspects of RDI2 and includes facilities for high-performance computing and communications, data management, computational services, and advanced visualization. The goal is to support both science and engineering enabled by ACI, as well as the science and engineering required to develop and advance ACI. The Rutgers ACI should also provide global linkages to the national and international ACI that will be used, for example, to link observational instruments, data streams, experimental tools, and testbeds.

This position will be responsible for establishing and maintaining the computer and online services, serves as the daily administrator for RDI2 research server, network and storage infrastructure, supports all desktop operating systems and software, and supports the development and maintenance of web pages, databases, spreadsheets, online surveys, and other technical applications for the unit.

• Performs analytical, technical and administrative work to plan, design, and install networked and stand-alone computer systems for offices and classroom space.
• Identifies, analyzes, and evaluates user needs and new products; recommends hardware and software purchases.
• Works with faculty and staff to determine optimal products and IT solutions.
• Provides technical support, assistance, and consultation to students, faculty, staff. Performs other duties as required.

RDI2 IT is an heterogeneous system, with IT belonging to different projects, desktop computers, special-purpose appliances, and high-performance networking and storage subsystem. Providing user support for such a system in coordination with the RDI2 IT systems team is a specialized task. This position will be under the leadership of the Associate Director of Technical Operations and, in turn, of the Director of the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2) as per the attached organizational chart.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience plus two years relevant experience in specialty area.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Requires demonstrated knowledge and experience in computing systems administration, including system specification, configuration, installation, operations, and maintenance. Also requires working knowledge of desktop software and operating systems (PC/Windows, PC/Linux and Apple systems/applications) currently in use with a combination of education/experience.
• Requires good communication skills, basic consultative, and organizational skills and computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Linux system administration: local file systems, kernel modules, SNMP, node monitoring, performance tuning.
• Network administration (Internet, DNS, DHCP, FTP, SMTP etc.).
• User management and accounting.
• Scripting (Shell, Python, etc.).
• Support Level 1/2 (Desktop/Network/Server Support)
• Installation of workstations/laptops, printers, network equipment, running cables.
• Windows, Mac OSX and Linux operating systems, and other software such as MS Office.
• Anti-virus and Malware Clean-up.
• Experience with ticketing system (ability to organize and maintain documentation).
• Ability to maintain a variety of projects and prioritize needs.
• Experience with networking, building cabling, and making network cables. Experience with network infrastructure, LANs, and network software – particularly in academic and research computing environments.

Equipment Utilized

This position regularly uses an environment composed of multiple desktop, server, storage and network systems, and will support the RDI2 community in user support issues.
RDI2 infrastructure will be composed of clusters of computers, network infrastructures, data-centric infrastructures and other equipment such as UPS, PDUs, etc. and a variety of desktop/laptop/servers systems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Special Conditions: Must be able to climb ladders, lift 30 pounds, and crawl under desks.
